Pomegranates really are granates concerning the size of fruits and flowers. The intensly orange, bell- shaped flowers can reach a length up to 5-6cm. Depending on the conditions in the winter quarter, flowers will show in early summer or summer. The flowers are self- fertile (insect- fertilisation) which means that you need only one plant for harvesting your own red Pomegranate fruits. Those can reach 5-10cm in diameter and burst open when ripe. The seeds are covered in juicy, red pulp that tastes sweet and aromatic. You can either enjoy it freshly squeezed, or buy it as syrup, then called ‘Grenadine’. The fruits need only 5-7 months to ripen, so you can harvest your own fruits in autumn, even the trees are cultivated in a pot. In a sunny place, Pomegranates already flower and bear fruits after 3-4 years, which is quite early for fruit trees. In a shady place it will grow well, but produce no flowers. Pomegranates are dense shrubs consisting of several shoots. The leaves are soft and in autumn change colour to golden. In April the new leaves grow with a reddish coating. The leafless trees can esily be wintered because they only need little light and warmth. In regions with mild winter, some customers reported us that they successfully grow Pomegranates planted in the garden. Interestingly, the fruits can be stored for about 6 months and even gain more aroma during that time. They are therefore important provisions for expeditions, cruises or caravans.
