The Sacred Bamboo (Nandina domestica) has nothing to do with real Bamboo but with its specific qualities attracts attention as a pot- wintergarden- or garden-plant: Its pinnate leaves cange colour to fire-red in autumn and change back again to green in next spring without being dropped. Young shoots, too, are redish. In summer, it is decorated with big, up to 30 cm long upright candles of white flowers and subsequently with glossy red berries. The multiple fruits bend under their own weight. But that’s not all: Sacred Bamboo -usually growing from several main shoots- is easy to care and very hardy. It can be planted in the garden where it prefers a moderately shady place on permanently humid and slightly loamy soil- just like in Japan, where it is used on a large scale in classical gardens and temples.
