Description

Bougainvillea is a member of the Nyctaginaceae family of tropical plants. It is native to Brazil, and its varieties are now cultivated as ornamentals in all regions of the world with tropical and subtropical climates.

Red is one of the most popular colors of bougainvilleas. With the variety 'Rubiana' we offer you a rich, attractive wine red and with the variety "Barbara Karst' a bright, clear red. After all, you have experienced the brightness yourself on vacation and would like to enjoy the same at home on your Mediterranean-style terrace. But this vacation picture is only a snapshot: even the most dark red bougainvillea like 'Rubiana' fades a little more with each passing day and would have presented itself in a different color even at your vacation spot a week or 10 days later. So what starts out as red buds in red bougainvillea varieties, which also have a slight reddish tinge to their young leaves, ends up as more or less light purple flowers. Please take this natural behavior into account when we, as a specialized company, offer you red bougainvillea around the year. Naturally, we cannot send every customer our bougainvilleas in the deep red initial stage of flowering all year round, and we hope that this circumstance will not reduce your pleasure in the vigorous plants, which will already produce a new flush of flowers after three to five weeks.

Yellow bougainvilleas are less vigorous than other color groups, but offer a particularly bright flower color. The color during the flowering phase ranges between dark, slightly orange yellow at the beginning and light yellow at the end. The leaves are not flat, but naturally appear somewhat curled. As this variety is slow-growing, it needs a good watering only in the summer months. In the transitional seasons and in winter, water sparingly and never allow the roots to become waterlogged.

White bougainvillea, with its color described as "bland", are less popular than red and orange varieties. But wrongly so: in colorful potted gardens, white bougainvilleas like the 'Jamaica White' variety provide a sense of calm and separate overly colorful flowers from one another. If you place a red and an orange bougainvillea next to each other, for example, they will compete or even clash with each other. With a white bougainvillea in between as a mediator, each of the three comes into its own. Not to mention the trend of a white garden design that impresses with its elegance and clarity. With a white bougainvillea on the terrace, add a gem to the white garden guests, bringing an international and exotic flair to your garden. White-flowering bougainvilleas are robust, vigorous and strong-growing and can tolerate a slightly larger planter every year or two.

Orange bougainvilleas like the variety 'Scarlett O'Hara' offer you several flower colors instead of just one. The barely opened flowers show a yellowish orange that darkens with each day and becomes a vibrant orange to orange-red when in full bloom. After that the flowers fade to pinks of various shades. Despite all this spectacle, orange bougainvilleas belong to the robust and vigorous representatives of their climbing species. Care tip: If you don't want to let the upright shoots that cling to their climbing aids grow unhindered in length, you can keep them low and bushy by consistently pruning them after each flush of flowers, and additionally in March.

Purple-flowered Bougainvillea glabra 'Sanderiana' is an absolute classic in container and winter gardens. They are more robust than the varieties in red, yellow or white (also available from Flora Toskana) and can survive wintering temperatures between 5 and 15 °C. Their abundance of flowers and duration of flowering is equal to Bougainvillea spectabilis hybrids, but their bracts are somewhat smaller. In view of the abundance of flowers, however, this does not matter. When grown as slender climbers or pruned into round globes, the full bloom almost completely covers the narrow leaves. Care tip: Pruning the thorny shoots is possible at any time, even in summer, when individual branches exceed the desired crown shape or length.
