'Dottore Natale Torre', ‘Washington Navel’ oranges presumably came from Brasil to California in 1873. Its growth is - typical for oranges- compact, its leaves have little wings and are dark green. The flowers show mainly in early summer and reach a size of 2-3 cm. They are white and intensely fragrant. Characteristic for the app. 10 cm big ‘Washington Navel’ fruit is its ‘navel’ at the fruit’s base.It is formed by a second, smaller fruit that is embedded into the larger fruit. If you cut the fruit open you can see this smaller fruit as a whole circle of fruit segments. ‘Washington Navel’ oranges are definitely seedless and easy to peel. The fruits segments can be easily separated from each other, making them very popular for direct consumption. Also, they have a very balanced proportion of sugar to acidity. Like all other Oranges, ‘Washington Navel’ have no problems with low temperatures and can be placed outside from April to October which also strengtens the plants and keeps them free of insect pests.
