Sitting in the shade of a Stone Pine and inhaling the aromatic scent of its 15-18 cm long pine needles is among the most beautiful experiences one can take home from a Mediterranean holiday. With a Stone Pine in a pot, winter garden or planted in the garden one can create this Mediterranean atmosphere at home - with only little effort. Stone Pines even grow well and quickly on poor (sandy) soil. As it advances in the years, the broad tree top grows upwards and forms the typical space requiring umbrella shape. If you wish you can accelerate accelerate this process by removing the lowest rows of branches. In order to avoid the tree top to grow too broad for the pot plant one can trim the young shoots in spring at two-thirds length before young needles start to grow. Pruning back into the old wood is not advisable because there will be hardly any new shoots. Even though Stone Pines tolerate aridity they grow best and more compact with constant and ample water supply.
