The name Calliandra translated literally means ‘beautiful man’ (gr.: kallos = beautiful, andros = man). The shrub’s flowers consist of fire-red, 3 to 4 cm long stamen that form a semi-circle with a diameter of 5 to 7 cm, thus resembling a powder-puff. This exotic bloom raises above fine acacia-like pinnate leaves with a silvery fluff and it is the reason for the plant’s attractiveness for balcony & terrace as well as greenhouse. Furthermore, the bloom can last from spring to autumn - with a pause during the hottest weeks in summer. The branches with their light-grey bark are slender, flexible and bend elegantly at the tip. Even one more characteristic adds to this South American evergreen’s attractiveness: at night, or - in case of a drought - also during daytime, the pinnate leaves fold up. As soon as the plant gets enough light and water, the pinnates will unfold again.
