The original Lemon from which the Lemon ‘Lunario’ has been selected by cultivation originates from South China and Burma/ Myanmar. ‘Lunario’ grows vigorous and quickly, its branches are upright to broad with only few thorns. Regular pruning helps limiting the growth and keeping the crown round and compact. The sweet and intensely smelling flowers (5-6 cm) develop from purple buds. The petals are strongly bent back and thick, the flowers may appear during the whole growing season. These are followed by oblong- oval, sometimes bent or strongly asymetrical fruits that can grow to the length of a hand. Typical for the fruit is its elongated end, though this characteristic feature might not always be developed clearly. When ripe, the peel does not change colour to dark yellow but remains rather light yellow and is only moderately thick. This leaves more space inside for the pale-yellow, sour pulp that almost anybody knows: ‘Lunario’ is the most common lemon in the fruit and vegetable section. The plant is continuously decorated with fruits in all different states of maturity so that harvesting is possible throughout the year.
